Architecture acquires meaning when it succeeds in establishing a continuous dialogue between the city and its people. Guided by this conviction, SON Architects+, an architectural practice based in Tirana, approaches design as a process of research, collaboration, and critical exploration. Supported by a multidisciplinary team of architects and designers, the studio develops urban and architectural interventions across a wide range of scales and levels of complexity. Through an open and collaborative methodology that brings together specialists from diverse disciplines, SON Architects+ strives to create architecture that not only responds to contemporary needs but also contributes to the development of a resilient and enduring urban identity.
The restoration of the Tirana Mosaic project emerged from the ambition to reinstate one of the city's most significant archaeological monuments as an active component of public life. Rather than treating the site as an isolated relic, the intervention reimagines it as an integral part of the urban fabric, creating new opportunities for the interpretation and experience of cultural heritage. The visitor's route is conceived as a spatial narrative, in which architecture guides movement through history, establishing a direct dialogue between the past and contemporary experience.
The architectural concept draws inspiration from the symbolism of the mosaic itself, reinterpreting the ancient “Flower of Life” motif as the generative principle underlying the project's spatial organization and structural composition. The protective canopy, entrance sequence, and new support building do not compete with the monument; instead, they establish a restrained architectural framework that safeguards, interprets, and enhances its accessibility to the public. Through a contemporary architectural language, the intervention operates with precision and sensitivity, emphasizing the site's historical significance while integrating the facilities required for its long-term conservation, research, and exhibition.
For SON Architects+, this project represents a profound reflection on the role of architecture in safeguarding and reactivating collective memory. It demonstrates that interventions within cultural heritage extend beyond the physical conservation of monuments to create new relationships between history, the city, and the community. Through this careful balance between respect for the past and a contemporary architectural vision, the project embodies the studio's philosophy of architecture as a responsible, restrained, and culturally meaningful practice capable of generating lasting value across time.
