In nature, erosion does not symbolise destruction; rather, it is a process that reveals what has existed beneath the surface all along. The same principle defines the design philosophy of PHI+ Architects, where every project seeks to uncover the essential qualities of space through conceptual clarity. Founded in 2018 and led by architects Dr. Sc. Rinë Zogiani and MSc. Bernard Nushi, the practice has emerged as one of the leading voices of contemporary architecture in Kosovo. Recognised with the BIG SEE Hospitality Design Award 2024 and featured on international platforms including ArchDaily, Archello, Amazing Architecture, Masilground Korea, and BIG SEE, PHI+ Architects has developed a practice in which architecture is understood as a medium of communication, identity, and experience. The studio was also among the first in Kosovo to introduce Light Steel Framing (LSF) construction, integrating advanced building technologies with a strong commitment to sustainable design.
The concept behind Erosion – Buzë Mustaqe emerged from the ambition to reduce space to its most authentic condition by removing every layer that does not contribute to its identity. Inspired by the natural process of erosion, which reveals rather than erases the intrinsic qualities of a material, the project translates this phenomenon into an architectural language of controlled incisions and exposed construction. Carefully articulated voids and unfinished surfaces shape an architecture that derives its character not from decoration, but from the honest expression of materiality.
The 310 m² interior is conceived as a spatial composition where material and light become the primary generators of architectural experience. Exposed concrete, untreated steel, and raw plaster surfaces are preserved in their natural state, while daylight penetrates through fragmented openings, accentuating texture, depth, and the tactile qualities of the materials. The open façade establishes a direct dialogue with the city, reinforcing the project's relationship with its urban context. At the same time, the design draws a parallel with the fashion industry, where unnecessary layers often conceal the true identity of a garment. Here, reduction becomes a design strategy that restores attention to what is essential.
Erosion – Buzë Mustaqe represents one of the clearest expressions of PHI+ Architects' design philosophy. It marks the moment when the practice moved beyond architecture as a purely functional response towards architecture as a form of critical inquiry. More than defining a single project, it established the studio's architectural language and its enduring commitment to shaping spatial identities through authenticity, material honesty, and conceptual precision.
